She said it slithered around trying to get out for a bit but then settled in the shade. She had some mesh on the view fence but some areas weren’t down all the way. Her yard had very little vegetation and not a lot of shade. The spot the snake coiled up under was not going to work for long. The home backs up to a golf course and a desert little mountain right off of it.

The snake didn’t really have any desert habitat left in the area. The small section of desert that was left had bulldozers in it. The yard didn’t have much for cover or vegetation in the back. Up front they had a few rosemary plants and lantanas. They have a block fence and one gate.

One of the girls ate her whole lunch in there not knowing but then someone spotted it just coiled under a desk. I caught it behind the wash machine in that room. They had their back door open all morning which faces a canal and a tiny strip of desert. This was a busy area and the snake is very lucky it didn’t get hit by a car.

We were able to take everything out of the shed and lift it up to get the snake out. The home had a lot of vegetation in the yard. It backed up to a little natural desert area as well.

The snake was a juvenile Western Diamondback, a little frail looking. Not much usable habitat in their front yard so snake was most likely just passing through in search of food or water. Hiked the snake out to a small patch of remaining desert east of the neighborhood and placed it into a deep burrow under a creosote bush.

It stayed there for the entire 50 minutes it took me to arrive. The home has a large wash behind it that opens into a broad stretch of desert. The backyard has a view fence and a single gate.

Had to do a bit of disassembly but managed to get the snake out unharmed. Took snake to a park across the street and released it into a small hole next to a sprinkler head.

She tried to block them from the inside to keep the snake from entering the backyard, but it ended up going there anyway. I caught it coiled under a chair in the backyard. The home backs up to a small desert strip that runs along a large canal. The backyard had no shade or vegetation.

10:00 PM		 Mesa 85212 Mojave Rattlesnake A tenant Mesa called to report a snake curled up outside their front door. They snapped a photo and sent it to me, and I was able to identify it as a Mojave Rattlesnake. This is an unusual area for a rattlesnake—there are some patches of desert to the south of the apartments, but they’re currently being developed. The snake was likely pushed out of that habitat and ended up at the complex. Unfortunately, this meant I had to find an alternative release site, as the only remaining habitat within its home range is now gone. I transported the snake a few miles east to open desert and released it into a large creosote mound near a wash, where it will hopefully acclimate and live a long life.

11:30 AM		 Mesa 85207 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner had a pool guy out, and he said that as he was walking in the back gate, he saw a rattlesnake making its way out of the backyard. This was an odd time to see it because it was 100 degrees out and the turf was very hot. I checked her backyard first, and she didn’t have much cover. I then went to the neighbor’s courtyard, which was very close, and found the snake coiled by their front door. The homes have a lot of desert just across the street.

The Western Diamondback had settled into a small divot in the dirt between two large bushes. The home backs directly onto open desert and the yard is not fenced, so the snake likely wandered in while searching for shade and water, which this yard has plenty of. The yard has many bushes and flowing water features but is well maintained, and the homeowners understand their situation: they love wildlife but do not want venomous snakes in their yard. The snake was hiked back into the desert behind their home and released in deep cover in a wash.

9:30 AM		 Mesa 85207 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner heard her small poodle barking and saw a rattlesnake near the back patio. She was able to bring the dog safely inside. Using an empty trash can, she contained the snake and moved the can into the shade, where the snake was later retrieved. Her yard did not have much vegetation, but she did have several sheds where snakes and rodents could have lived for long periods of time. Directly behind her house was open desert and a park.

7:00 AM		 Mesa 85207 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowners first noticed the snake on the Fourth of July, when they had guests over and were rattled at by the snake in their front entryway. It was in the corner up against the home by the front door, where the house has a large overhang that creates a very shady area. There are rocks there that provide cover, and the snake was in the corner among them. The homeowners had not been using the front door, and they noticed the snake in the same spot again today, so they wanted it removed. Their home is right off a large wash that leads to a desert hillside on one side, and there is another desert hillside behind their home. Their yard is very large, with many well-watered plants and numerous places for snakes to take shelter from the heat.

He figured it was just a lizard but went over there and saw that it was a rattlesnake. He said the dog is fine and didn’t get bitten. The home has a view fence that backs up to some desert that leads right to the state land not to for away. They had a little garden next to that lantana that looked like it had just been watered.

The garage had a big gap underneath that the snake likely used to get in the garage. The home has some open land around it but it’s being built up and has construction equipment on it. There were a lot of farm fields around and very little desert left.

She brought all seven dogs inside and watched the snake move onto the patio, then lost sight of it. I searched the patio first but didn’t find it. I then went around the corner to a garden area with a shed. While looking in the shed, I saw the snake coiled up behind a generator. This was a horse property with a few sheds, some fountains, and a large lot enclosed by a block fence and a large sliding gate.

The snake was discovered when they were moving some objects around. The young Mojave rattlesnake was likely born within the last 2–3 weeks and was living the dream in this air-conditioned storage room. The snake was released into a rodent hole in the nearby desert, away from the facility.

When I arrived, the Mojave rattlesnake was still sitting in the same spot curled up. The home has a nice desert patch right next to it, so the snake likely came from there and just found a spot to escape the heat during the day. Snake was taken back into the desert and released into a packrat nest under a large creosote bush.

I hiked the snake back into the desert and placed it into a deep cave in the side of a wash within its home range.

9:30 PM		 Mesa 85201 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Homeowner called with a rattlesnake under their travel trailer at an RV park. They were very concerned about their outdoor cats. Since the travel trailer was very high up off the ground and not fenced in and the rattlesnake was accessible from the edge of it.I decided to go out and relocate the snake. When I got there, it was curled up in between 2 ladder rungs at the back end of the trailer. I was able to relocate the snake to a nearby wash into deep coverage by the Salt River.

As she was watching it and waiting for me, she saw the rattlesnake go under her gate and out into the natural desert in between her house and the other neighbor‘s house. Her husband went out to see if he could see it, and he saw two rattlesnakes. The two rattlesnakes were fighting, then as he was looking around, he saw a third rattlesnake under another bush. That rattlesnake ended up going in a hole under the bush. I got the two other rattlesnakes under the other bush and tried watering out for the third rattlesnake, but it never came out and I searched the whole area and I could not find it. This home is right off of a golf course with some natural desert in between and they have a little mountain hillside right beside them. It is a rainy day and not hot so the snake had full range to go do what they wanted. Their backyard is a view fence with one gate.
