Phoenix 85024 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Western diamondback in yard. Snake bit families dog and dog was taken to vet. Snake managed to get into backyard from around neighbors house and into one of two side entrances, as block wall surrounding house provided no entrances around back of house where habitat was. Snake likely wandered into back yard after managing to wander into the neighborhood and needed to find shade. Back yard had plenty of shade and cool places like pool equipment for snake to seek shelter. No evidence of rodent activity, so likely a coincidence that snake was there in my opinion. Good candidate for fencing.

Phoenix 85024 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Customer called about a small rattlesnake found in garage. Sent picture and confirmed atrox. Arrived at customers home and was shown to the garage. Noticed a yearling atrox with 3 buttons in ambush against hot water heater. Atrox was near a door that lead to backyard. Utilized giant tweezers to capture snake and bucket without incident. Performed inspection of garage and found no other snakes. Performed quick inspection of the backyard. Cinderblock wall all around with one gate being the point of entry. Customer stated there had been a lot of construction in the area. House was in the end of a cul-de-sac and there was a small parcel of desert a block north of the home where I suspect the snake may have come from. Behind the property is a park to the south. I suspect the snake entered through the backyard through the gate and into the garage through the back door. I did notice loose garage door seal as well so snake may have come through there. Since the are is less than 15 minutes from me I took snake home as to bring it back to the area in the morning to have more light to find suitable hibernaculum in the mountain area just east of customer’s home.

Arrived at property and was shown to the snake which was in the front courtyard against a north facing wall behind a metal box. Adult atrox I believed to be female and possibly gravid. Utilized tongs to capture and bucket snake with no issue. Snake did strike at tongs and was noted to be pretty defensive. Snake did not stop rattling the entire time I was with it. Performed inspection of rest of courtyard and backyard and found no other snakes. Customers stated they had recently received a fencing quote and was likely to call to schedule after this morning.

12:30 AM
Phoenix 85024 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Received a call about a rattlesnake at the back door of a home in north Phoenix. Arrived at home and callers wife greeted me at front door and provided me a key for the side gate. Entered the back yard and greeted customer who showed me the snake. Observed a young adult atrox in ambush in corner of the patio facing east. Utilized tongs to capture snake without incident. Snake did not rattle. Performed quick inspection of back and front yards. Customer stated they saw it the night before and were able to chase it away with a spade. Customer saw it on a Ring camera before calling 911. Customer had stated they have never seen a snake in the 6 years they have lived there. This was an unusual area to find an atrox. The closest access point to habitat was several blocks to the NE. No wash or other surrounding habitat. Home was in the middle of a neighborhood. Thinking the snake may have been in the area for a while I checked the front yard and surrounding homes for places a snake might try to den in. The customer had a car in the driveway with a car cover that draped down to the concrete. I suspect the snake may have taken refuge under this for at least a day or so and would move into the backyard via side gate at night in search of food or water. Backyard small and free of landscaping largely but several pieces of patio furniture with covers. Provided customers education on snake behavior and my suspicions of why the snake was there. Informed them that the home itself was an odd area to find a rattlesnake but to exercise awareness in the future.

Used Pam spray and rubber grips on giant tweezers to gently work the oil on and release snake from the trap. Once free I used tweezers to place into bucket. Snake seemed somewhat docile but this was my first encounter with this species so I’m not sure if it was typical behavior. Offered property inspection but customer declined. Provided education on snake behavior and offered a free fencing quote for rattlesnake prevention and customer declined. Garage door seal was in good shape and home is brand new.

Phoenix 85024 Western Diamondback The pest guy saw the mother Diamondback coiled up by the AC unit. When I went to grab her, she zipped into a nearby large hole going under the foundation of the home. This hole went deep. I put a hose in there, and after about 20 minutes of water, I got the mother. When I went to get the hose to put it away, I saw a baby rattlesnake come out of this hole. I then continued watering for an hour, and finally it flooded up, and I retrieved five baby rattlesnakes. Phoenix 85024 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Last night we were out at this house, and Maggie got a western diamondback from this backyard. Today, the homeowner, being a little on edge, went and looked around the backyard and saw another rattlesnake coiled up behind some stacked wood he had. This was a large male rattlesnake. I’m not sure what sex the rattlesnake was. Maggie got it, but he could have smelled the female if it were a female last night. His backyard was pretty clear, but he had stacked wood and Halloween decorations on the side of his yard, and that was where the snake was .This area has desert around it, but also has a lot of recent destruction for new homes.
