After driving to the location I learned the homeowner had put some small breathing holes in the lid of the bucket. Upon safely removing the lid the species was determined to be a Blacktailed Rattlesnake. Shortly thereafter the snake was relocated further along the same mountain the homeowners property resided under a concealed rocky overhang. Increased activity due to recent monsoon rains could potentially explain the snakes presence.

This is smack dab in the middle of the city nothing but businesses and concrete. There is no desert for 20 miles. The homeowners also showed me a photo of a rattlesnake that had been killed by their landscaper a few days prior, which was another black tailed rattlesnake.

The back yard is right up against the northern foothills of south mountain in a neighborhood that we commonly get called out to. The yard is not snake proof and has plenty of gaps and spaces for a snake to get through, I was shocked when they told me this was their first rattlesnake they’d seen in the time they’ve lived in this home. Inspected the rest of the yard and did not find any other snakes, recommended they trim back a few overgrown bushes to help see under them better. Snake was taken out into the hills to the SW of the home and placed in a deep tunnel in a wash wall that was surrounded by plenty of shady trees and rocky habitat suitable for this species.
