The front yard is essentially open desert, with widely scattered homes throughout the neighborhood. He said he had seen the snake for a couple of days in a row; it would leave at night but always return during the day to take advantage of the shaded area where I picked it up. I took the snake across the street and found a nice patch of open desert with a decent-sized wash running through it. The snake was released into a packrat nest underneath a large tree on the side of the wash.

9:00 AM		 Scottsdale 85266 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Homeowner in North Scottsdale called about a western diamondback rattlesnake in his backyard. By the time I got there, it had moved from where he last saw it. I looked around all the easy areas as there were some decent spots to hide, and the yard had some snake fencing but definitely still had small gaps for entry and exit points in the side gate. Began flooding underneath a large shed that was near where he last saw the snake and about 25 minutes later the little guy poked his head out. Snake was released into a packrat nest next to a wash in a nearby patch of desert.

9:30 AM		 Scottsdale 85255 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner saw the snake half way under a table on his back patio. He was able to put it in a bucket. Three weeks ago he caught a rattlesnake out front by his trash cans and placed it in the wash across the street. I compared pictures and this was the same snake. The home had a wash in front of it and a golf course behind it. They had a lot of vegetation in there yard and a lot of good spots to hide. There was also a gophersnake behind the table on the back patio but they kept that. The area has some desert around them but it’s very spotty and not a safe place for the snake to be roaming around with all the traffic and people.

9:30 AM		 Scottsdale 85259 Kingsnake Called us for a western diamondback rattlesnake and a kingsnake. He had a video of both in the courtyard. The fire department apparently came before we did and caught the rattlesnake, but the guy told them to put it back so I could get it, because the fire department told him they were only going to take it down the street. I searched the area extensively and flooded out the gaps between the paver patio and the wall, and flooded out two kingsnakes, but the rattlesnake was nowhere to be found. It could still be under that patio because the under-cavity is pretty extensive, but since it was harassed by the fire department, it could have left. There was about 20 minutes of him not watching it before I got there.

They were able to see the interaction and call the curious puppy inside as the snake was rattling. Talked extensively about trimming shrubbery, not leaving bowls of water for birds on the ground, rodent control, fencing options, cleaning up trash on the side of the house, and dog training as ways to make the area a less hospitable habitat.

8:00 AM		 Scottsdale 85255 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner had this snake removed two days ago by the fire department, but it came back. The snake was coiled under a bush right in front of the front door. Just before I arrived, she saw a bunny go by the snake and the snake lunged and struck at it. Both the snake and bunny went flying, and when the bunny was running away it was limping. I saw the bunny and it had its leg lifted. We aren’t positive it was envenomated, but it seems likely. This was a large male Western Diamondback. Next to where the snake was, there was a large cactus with a huge packrat nest in it and several other holes. She also had water dishes out for the bunnies right there. The home had a large amount of desert directly across the street.

4:30 PM		 Scottsdale 85259 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Dispatched to a call where the customer stated there was a rattlesnake near their back porch. Arrived to the home and was escorted into the backyard by the customer. I observed a large atrox in ambush on the east side of the home. Snake was partially covered by a jasmine that was drip irrigated. Utilized tongs to capture snake. Snake struck at tongs several times and then rattled for the duration of my time with it. Performed inspection of both yards and found no other snakes. Yard had a few areas that I pointed out that had overgrown vegetation. Customer had 1/4 mesh installed by landscapers. Offered a free fencing quote and they agreed. Customer stated they spend summers in Show Low and had just returned. Customer stated landscapers found another snake the week before and killed it. I believe snake came from desert across the street and through the side fate on the east side.

The neighbor had him call us to have it safely removed. There was a lot of lantana yards and lush vegetation around. This side of the canal was all homes. The other side of the canal was a lot of desert so it crossed at some point. This was a good quarter mile from good habitat.

Both side gates have large gaps, and the snake likely just entered the yard while wandering around. The snake was released into a packrat nest in a wash near the neighborhood, but away from homes.

11:30 AM		 Scottsdale 85266 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake A rattlesnake was found in the yard by the homeowner, trying to find an escape route. The couple who lives there bought the home with rattlesnake fencing already installed. They were under the impression it had been done by us, but it clearly had not. The mesh holes were too large and not secured in the view fence, and only some of the drainage holes in the block wall were secure. There was a gap/damage in the side gate rattlesnake fencing, which appears to be how the snake entered the backyard and then could not find an exit. This is their first rattlesnake in many years, according to them. They are interested in our fencing options. The snake was relocated into natural desert, into packrat nests about one mile away.

I arrived about 45 minutes later and searched the yard until I found the snake coiled up near the pool pump. This was a large yard with a lot of cover from both landscaping and general clutter. The block wall surrounding the backyard had many drain holes that appeared to be roughly filled with mortar and blocked off with pavers.

I was able to relocate the snake to some nearby, heavily vegetated habitat with evidence of rodents everywhere.

The snake was in the corner of the garage near the water softener. There was no clear entry point, as the garage was well sealed, so I imagine the snake entered when the garage door was open.
