The home was at the base of South Mountain but located several blocks away from any sort of decent habitat. |

I was able to relocate the snake to some nearby, heavily vegetated habitat with evidence of rodents everywhere. |

The neighborhood is bordered by lots of open desert. |

When I arrived, the Mojave rattlesnake was still sitting in the same spot curled up. The home has a nice desert patch right next to it, so the snake likely came from there and just found a spot to escape the heat during the day. Snake was taken back into the desert and released into a packrat nest under a large creosote bush. |

Phoenix | 85050 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake | Received a call about a rattlesnake in the backyard near a cactus. Arrived at the home, and the customers escorted me to the backyard. I noticed an adult atrox in ambush against a wall, just to the left of a clump of opuntia. I attempted to capture it using tongs, but the snake slipped out and escaped into the clump of opuntia. I asked the customer if I could remove paddles of the cactus, and they replied, “Please do.” I removed a large portion of the clump using my tongs and hook. The snake remained sheltered behind the large base mound of the cactus. I decided to use a hose to flood the area, and the snake eventually made its way out, where I captured it with tongs and bucketed it without incident. There were small strips of habitat nearby, but the home was fairly deep inside the neighborhood. The customers stated they have had gopher snakes before but never a rattlesnake. Given the size and age of the snake, I suspect it may have been eking out a living in the neighborhood for some time. The backyard had plenty of shade and drip irrigation. I pointed this out to the customer and provided education on snake behavior. Due to the location of the house within the neighborhood, suggesting fencing did not seem appropriate. The customer was insistent on paying by invoice. |

Arrived at the property and was escorted to the backyard by the customer. I was taken to an enclosure where the customer sheltered feral cats. I noticed an adult Atrox in a defensive posture right at the entrance. The customer stated there were two cats inside. I entered the enclosure and captured the snake using tongs and bucketed it without issue. |

Cave Creek | 85262 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake | Received a call about a rattlesnake in the courtyard behind a fountain. Arrived at the property and was shown the fountain fixture, which was backed against the stucco wall that housed a garage on the other side. The customer stated he watched the snake go behind the fountain on one side and kept his eyes on it until I arrived. The customer stated the snake was approximately 2 ft long. I observed a small hole on one side of the fountain and decided to flood the area using the customer’s hose. After about 15 minutes of flooding, with nothing coming out on the side with the house, I began watching the other side, which appeared to be blocked off with rocks. Using my flashlight, I was able to see a small portion of an atrox head attempting to peek out. I used my hook to remove the rocks, and the snake exited almost immediately. I used tongs to capture it. The snake escaped the bucket five times before I was able to secure the lid. The snake definitely came from the preserve that the property backed up to. I pointed out areas of concern in the courtyard and suggested that fencing could help keep rattlesnakes from entering. The customer declined. |

Backyard mostly free of plant except for line of oleanders which lined the view fence on the west side of yard. Fence was on a high enough wall towards the back of the property but wall shortened down to approx 24” towards front. No fencing. Wash ran on the other side of fence and straight up the mountain. Pointed this out to customer. Offered free fencing quote and she declined. She asked about repellent and I provided education on how it did not work. |
