Tucson | 85730 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Western Diamondback Rattlesnake | This customer called RS because she’s been seeing the same snake on a slope of unconsolidated rock landscaping leading down from the swimming pool. Today, a second snake had apparently joined the first, and they were both coiled under an overhanging stone with a burrow behind it, shaded by a small Opuntia species of cactus. Snakes were older-looking male and female Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes. Temps were in the 60s and both snakes were sluggish. I have had multiple snake calls in this neighborhood over my tenure with RS. |

Scottsdale | 85266 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Western Diamondback Rattlesnake | Received a call regarding two rattlesnakes in the backyard. When I arrived, the customer greeted me in the driveway and escorted me to the backyard. The customer stated he had captured one with a golf club and put it in a 5-gallon bucket with another 5-gallon bucket stacked on top of it to seal it. I peeked inside and noticed a large female atrox. The real work began when the customer showed me the pool equipment storage area where he said “the bigger one” was. The customer pointed out a gap underneath the eaves of the wall below their back patio. There were a few pumps with hoses, wires, and conduits running parallel to the wall that were above and in front of the gap. When I initially flooded the hole the male atrox appeared but stayed close to the gap and within all the hoses and conduits. I utilized the tongs several times to attempt to capture but the snake had itself wrapped between the equipment and hoses and I was not successful. Continued flooding and observing in about 10-15 min increments. There were several times when a large shed would flush out but no snake. I would have to stop each time to allow the water pooling up inside the area to drain. Snake reappeared after my 4th attempt of flooding but remained on the breach of the gap. Used the hose to gently spray the snake directly and it darted out to the side opposite of the gap where I was able to successfully capture it with my tongs. Massive atrox. The biggest I’ve personally seen. At least 4ft and likely bigger. Very heavy snake. Bucketed him with no incident. The snake was actually very mellow considering everything I put him through. The snake was old and I suspect had lived there for years considering all the development within the area (The Boulders). The customer stated that when he purchased the home that the builder said that he believed a snake was living in that location. The customer stated he is interested in fencing around the pool equipment area but I do not think the customer has an actual fence that runs around his backyard. |

Found a gopher snake hiding in the bush. While attempting to capture the gopher snake, found a kingsnake. Phoenix | 85083 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Coachwhip | Was dispatched for a call about two possible snakes in a backyard. Arrived and met the customer, who escorted me into the backyard. The customer stated she noticed her dog barking and then saw two snakes, both of which scurried away once the dog began barking. Noted a neonate atrox behind a plastic flowerpot in the side yard on the west side of the property. Used forceps to capture it and placed it in a bucket. The snake was very defensive and struck the forceps several times. Upon inspection, it appeared the atrox had something stuck on the underside of its chin. Looking closer, the atrox’s jaw seemed dislocated, as it wouldn’t close entirely. The more I examined the head of the atrox, the more it seemed to have suffered some physical trauma. Began searching the rest of the side yard. As I moved a large plastic storage container away from the wall, I noted a coachwhip quickly dart back under the container. I was able to use tongs to capture the coachwhip and contain it in a second bucket. Inspected the rest of the yard, and no additional snakes were found. The customer is interested in dog training and a fence quote. The backyard is largely neat, with minimal places for a snake to seek refuge for long periods; however, the side yard where the snakes were found is largely shaded. There are some drainage holes on the western wall that lead to the wash running next to her house. The customer has a view fence, but it seems to be elevated high enough on a wall. I suspect both snakes entered through a small hole between the brick wall and the house, which is the closest access point from the wash. I’m certain the dog interrupted the coachwhip while it was attempting to eat the atrox. |

Tucson | 85745 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Blacktailed Rattlesnake, None | This customer called from a neighborhood on a steep, rocky hillside with some large volcanic rocks. Yard workers had cleared two rodent nests the day before. There was a WDB adult female with a “deflated” posterior that seemed to have recently had babies. No babies were found. it is presumed they were in the now buried nest. Next to it was an older adult Northern Blacktailed Rattlesnake. I searched the property but no other animals were found. Yard workers had seen a third snake without a rattle but related to homeowner that it had “escaped”. |
