Scottsdale 85260 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner was outside with her dogs when she heard them barking at a snake by the back fence. She brought the dogs inside and watched the rattlesnake. It was at the edge of her grass, out in the open, in a very small patch of shade. It was 106 degrees out, and I was very surprised it was where it was. She had a few smaller rosemary plants in the backyard, which were the only shady spots besides her back patio. The home had a desert drainage behind it and some desert beside it that led to a larger desert area.

10:00 PM
Cave Creek 85331 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Received a call about a rattlesnake in a backyard. Customers stated they believed the snake had just eaten something because it was slow and fat. I advised them it could be a gravid snake. When I arrived at the home, I was escorted to the backyard by the customer. They said they first noticed the snake stretched out in the yard while taking out the garbage. They also pointed out a large, dead spiny lizard they believed the snake was about to eat. They showed me where they last saw the snake move underneath a large cycad near the pool. I did a quick perimeter search of the backyard first before inspecting underneath the cycad. I used a hook to lift up the foliage of the cycad and noted a large atrox in ambush against the plant. I used the hook in an attempt to drag the snake out from underneath the plant before using tongs to capture it. The snake moved around the cycad, and I used tongs to capture it and the hook for support in case the snake was gravid. Once in the bucket, I looked at the snake and believed it was just a larger male. The rattle appeared to have been broken off about halfway down. The snake had a mellow demeanor. I inspected the rest of the backyard and noted several areas of concern: overgrown bushes off the back patio, several large vines that had grown over three walls, and a shed with several pieces of pottery stacked up against it. I pointed all of these out to the customer. Given the apparent age of the snake, I informed the customers it may have been in the yard for some time and encouraged landscaping for all the plants I identified. The only opening where a snake could get through that I observed was the gate on the eastern side yard. Otherwise, the gate seems difficult for snakes to get through. Drainage holes in the bricks were covered by 1/4” mesh. I offered the customer a free quote for fencing, and they agreed. There is a desert wash just one house over to the northeast.

Tucson 85730 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake I took the snake down into Pantano Wash, roughly 100 yards from the property. I placed it at the edge of a burrow leading into a packrat midden complex. It remained coiled and silent, its head hidden, until I adjusted its placement a few times and it realized it was at the mouth of the burrow. At that point, it quickly disappeared inside.

Scottsdale 85259 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake A homeowner in Scottsdale called about a western diamondback rattlesnake curled up in the corner of his front porch. The front yard is essentially open desert, with widely scattered homes throughout the neighborhood. He said he had seen the snake for a couple of days in a row; it would leave at night but always return during the day to take advantage of the shaded area where I picked it up. I took the snake across the street and found a nice patch of open desert with a decent-sized wash running through it. The snake was released into a packrat nest underneath a large tree on the side of the wash.

Cave Creek 85331 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake One of the snakes went deep in the pipe and she couldn’t get it out. The homeowner called me today because he saw a snake by the area she got the one yesterday. While watching it another western diamondback slithered next to the other in the shady corner up against the house. The snakes were trying to get back in the pipe but it had been filled in and they didn’t know it. The homeowner called was on a large lot on a desert hillside with a large wash running right by the property. There was more desert than homes out this way.

Scottsdale 85266 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Homeowner in North Scottsdale called about a western diamondback rattlesnake in his backyard. By the time I got there, it had moved from where he last saw it. I looked around all the easy areas as there were some decent spots to hide, and the yard had some snake fencing but definitely still had small gaps for entry and exit points in the side gate. Began flooding underneath a large shed that was near where he last saw the snake and about 25 minutes later the little guy poked his head out. Snake was released into a packrat nest next to a wash in a nearby patch of desert.

Scottsdale 85255 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner saw the snake half way under a table on his back patio. He was able to put it in a bucket. Three weeks ago he caught a rattlesnake out front by his trash cans and placed it in the wash across the street. I compared pictures and this was the same snake. The home had a wash in front of it and a golf course behind it. They had a lot of vegetation in there yard and a lot of good spots to hide. There was also a gophersnake behind the table on the back patio but they kept that. The area has some desert around them but it’s very spotty and not a safe place for the snake to be roaming around with all the traffic and people.

I was out here a week and a half ago for a rattlesnake in the exact same spot. The new community is on a desert hillside and there is freshly flattened out desert near by with a lot of new homes still to be built.

Scottsdale 85259 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner noticed the snake coiled by the front door in the shade. The snake was in an inclosed courtyard but the door to the courtyard had gaps. It was very cool in there and they had a fountain. There was a big wash across the street that led to even more desert. He didn’t want the back checked so I’m not sure what was going on back there. This was a gravid female.

Arizona City 85123 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake I went to this home yesterday for an inspection because there dog had been bitten by a rattlesnake the night before. I did not find the snake yesterday but they had a big shed in the back yard which I suspected the snake retreated to. There was no seeing or even being able to get the snake out from under the shed with it intact. Today they decided to take down the big shed and under the floor board the snake was coiled up. There was a snake skin under there and a large rodent hole. I flooded out the hole and no one else came out. The home only really had this shed for cover in the yard. This community has a lot of natural desert surrounding it.

Phoenix 85024 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Western diamondback found by outside AC drip line and near outside hose in backyard. Homeowner said he was 1 foot away turning off the hose and did not see snake before it rattled. It scared him a lot. This is the 4th rattlesnake in 10 years. Though he does keep his yard and plants trim at the bottom, he does have many plants and a waterfall while living right next to a natural desert preserve. He is interested in fencing.

Tucson 85745 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Homeowner has a stained glass door with a long, shaded entryway into a courtyard. This snake was seen in that area (as was the first snake i removed here on a previous visit). It looks like a good place to get out of the heat. The yard itself has lots of plants and bushes and there are rodent burrows. The snake had moved to one of these and coiled nearby.

Marana 85743 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Homeowner had been, over a period of weeks, observing a young adult female WDB coiled outside her kitchen window. When it got too hot the snake would disappear into a valve box next to its normal hangout spot. They had a plumber coming out and wanted us to move the snake so as not to scare them. The snake was in the rather deep (.75 meter?) Valve box cavity along with a large desert hairy scorpion and the desiccated corpse of a rodent.
